A washing machine small enough to fit in a pocket that runs on normal batteries has been developed by a Chinese manufacturer.
The newly designed „Coton” manufacturer is already on sale in Japan where there is a well-established market for new electronic gadgetry and it has reportedly been a sell-out success.
The device is the same size as an electric shaver able to remove anything from dirt to red wine stains. With a height of 176mm, a diameter of 46mm, and a weight of just 200g, it is powered by three AAA batteries.
The product model HCW-HW1, better known as Coton, belongs to the company AQUA, a subsidiary of Haier Group, headquartered in Qingdao City of east China’s Shandong Province. It was initially developed to target small, stubborn stains, such as those of wine, coffee, and blood, which might not require the entire item of clothing to be put in a washing machine.
The new product differs greatly from the conventional washing machine not only in terms of size, but also in that it does not have a wash bucket. Users of Coton need firstly to put an oil-absorbing sheet behind the dirty part of clothes, apply a liquid detergent on the dirty patch, then simply „paint” over the dirty patch with Coton, which will spray water onto the surface of the clothing.
This method of washing, dubbed „squeeze washing”, requires just 10ml of water and takes 30 seconds, which is not only environmentally friendly, but also does less damage to sensitive fabrics.
The device, which has been marketed as more of a supplement rather than a replacement for traditional washing machines, is currently priced at around 60 GBP.
